In response to the effects material objects have in society today, there has been a growing practice of cleansing one’s lifestyle down to the bare necessities. What happens when you have to live, work, and meditate within the confines of a small environment? How do details contribute to the functionality of these dwellings? These are the questions this project explores.
After using collages as a method to explore the spatial experiences associated with live, work, and meditate, an iterative process investigated architectural precedents in the design of metabolism architecture. The history of these large structures provided an opportunity to predict how technology might be able to reimagine the architecture.
The resulting design involves a steel structural frame that contains a modular living design. There are two different versions of the dwelling in order to accommodate a wider range of inhabitants. By taking advantage of technological advances of the future, a robotic arm moves modules around the frame in response to changes throughout the year and user preference. The living and working activities of occupants will occur within each modular dwelling. Voids within the structure allow for nodes of interaction where there is the opportunity for meditation to occur at a communal scale.
