Raffaello’s School of Athens fresco in the Vatican served as the case study to investigate how forms manipulate perception through the use of perspective. Following this initial research question, it became clearer that obviously the location of planes and forms in a composition altered one’s understanding of space. However as the investigation continued, it became clearer that another factor had a more significant impact on the understanding of space: the composition’s framed view.

The reimagined School of Athens demonstrates the impact frames have on one’s understanding of space. Comparing vertical, horizontal, and other geometric frames illustrates that while altering the planes within a composition changes the spatial qualities, the viewer’s frame had a more significant impact in altering the perception of space.
