The doorknob acts as an interface between the user and architecture. It is the first point of contact for entry. It prompts the user to conceive ideas of what is to come. Its size, shape, materials, and physical attributes dictate the experience of the user as they enter the space. These characteristics demonstrate the essential and highly intricate detail that is the doorknob.
The first handshake of the architecture begins when the hand makes contact with the doorknob. This idea prompted a detailed exploration into the experience of using existing doorknobs around campus. Concepts such as materiality, ergonomics, and aesthetics were analyzed to see how they compliment each other. The relationship between the doorknob, the door, the threshold, and the architecture were all thoroughly investigated.
