ACTIONABLE SURFACES

exploration in formal arrangements

Instructor: Peter Scheidt
Spring 2024

This project began by approaching the table as an elevated horizontal plane. In this configuration, the table surface leaves the human with relatively few possible responses to interact with it. This prompted an investigation into the possibilities of the table as more than just an elevated surface but rather a dynamic piece that prompts a multitude of actions when in a space. Taking inspiration from Richard Serra’s Verb List, I began to imagine how the surface can be manipulated by a series of actions to change its form, function, and human response.
